The Morris School District serves the communities of Morristown and Morris Township (pre-K through high school) and Morris Plains (grades 9-12) by providing a supportive and challenging educational environment for a total student population of approximately 4,800. Within the District there is one preschool, three primary schools (K-2), three intermediate schools (3-5), one multiage magnet school (K-5), one middle school (6-8), and one high school.
In addition to the pre-K-12 program, the Morris School District operates an innovative Community School that offers an extensive adult school curriculum for lifelong learners. The Community School also provides a nurturing before and after-school childcare program, Sunrise Sunset, for Morris School District children of busy parents. Housed in each of the District’s elementary schools, Sunrise Sunset offers a safe, supportive and supervised environment in which boys and girls can work and play before and after school. The Community School’s ever-popular summer program, Summer Plus, provides children with an active, enjoyable, and local alternative to summer camp.
All 520 of Morris School District certificated staff members meet the New Jersey standard of “Highly Qualified” teacher. Faculty include classroom teachers, special education teachers, child study team members, guidance counselors, enrichment/”gifted & talented” teachers, nurses, library/media specialists, art teachers, and ELL teachers.
The average elementary class size is 18. Class sizes at the middle school and high school level vary depending upon the subject. For example, a high school Advanced Placement physics class may have as few as 13 students while a social studies class may have 20 or more.

Alfred Vail School (K-2) – At Alfred Vail School we pride ourselves in educating our students academically, socially, and emotionally. Located at 125 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains, there are approximately 325 children from culturally diverse backgrounds, enrolled in kindergarten through second grade whom benefit from this charge. All children have the advantage of learning in a safe, cheerful, and risk free environment supported by positive reinforcement and encouragement. Our well rounded instructional programs can be described as having strong emphasis on literacy, writing, and math. In addition we continue to engage the children with valuable programs in character education, music, art, physical education, world language, library, and technology.
We provide English as a second language, enrichment for our second graders, and implement an intensive literacy and math program for those students who have been identified as, in need of remediation.
The Language Arts component employed is a balanced literacy method which encompasses: read alouds, independent reading, guided reading, shared reading, language and morphology, and writing and reading. The Everyday Math component is a researched based, acclaimed program, which gives children the opportunity to apply their knowledge of mathematics to everyday life. Our character education component utilizes our guidance counselor as a hands-on-educator, presenting classroom lessons on anti-bullying, good citizenship and the importance of conflict resolution. We celebrate the students’ successes with Student of the Month, and we promote good nature through a program called Random Acts of Kindness.
Alfred Vail has a committed and devoted alliance with our Home School Association. This partnership has allowed our school to attain additional programs and materials enabling us to carry out our goals in educating the children academically, socially and emotionally. Our relationship with our Home School Association clearly demonstrates the importance and power of a school and community partnership.
We are proud of our many accomplishments at Alfred Vail, but as educators we realize our work is never done. There is an understanding that we too are life long learners as well as our students, and we therefore work towards continuous improvement. Through professional development, including Assessment for Learning, and the formation of Teaching Learning Communities, Alfred Vail School promotes, supports, and encourages professional development and academic growth for our staff.

Hillcrest School (K-2) – Hillcrest is located at 160 Hillcrest Avenue, Morristown and has a population of 310 students. Hillcrest provides students with rich academic and social experiences. Our highly qualified staff of professionals is dedicated to providing all students with a nurturing environment that promotes academic excellence.
We use a Balanced Literacy approach to instruction in Reading, Language Arts and Writing. A combination of on-going formative assessment, quality literature and the Workshop model for reading and writing instruction help us provide academic rigor and engaging instruction experiences for students at all levels. Our teachers work tirelessly to foster student love for literature and sustainable growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension. We utilize a continuum based report card as a way to identify student successes while designing a systematic plan for teaching to students needs. The use of the Reading and Writing Continuums helps our teachers and parents utilize common language when setting and supporting learning goals for all students.
Everyday Math is the math program used throughout our school that mixes traditional mathematical skills with exciting “everyday” application. This program is highly acclaimed and aligns with NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. The activities are hands-on and challenge students to use higher-level thinking skills. By design, Everyday Math provides children with several opportunities throughout the school year to be introduced to and master math concepts.
Hillcrest provides additional instructional services, including supportive instruction in Language Arts, Mathematics, English as a Second Language, and Bilingual Education.
Our special area teachers are extensively trained and very knowledgeable in their areas of expertise. Our Physical Education, Science, Music and Art teachers are able to provide structured and interactive learning in their own classrooms, thereby enhancing the educational experience for our students. Our students have access at home and at school to Rosetta Stone as a way to support world language acquisition.
The Media Center at Hillcrest boasts approximately 13,000 books, a computerized card catalog, and a television system connected to a computer for instructional purposes. Our students attend computer class in our Computer Lab, which houses twenty-two computers, several color printers and scanners. Students are given instruction and support as they navigate instructional websites and use the internet for research. In addition to the computers in our lab, there is at least one computer in each classroom at Hillcrest.
Parents and staff work together to promote good character, peaceful resolution of conflict, and effective communication skills for our students.
- At The Bank at Hillcrest, children earn coins for exhibiting good character through the school day. The coins are deposited in our bank and are redeemable for various educational items. At the end of each month, those Hillcrest students with the highest account balances are announced to the whole school and wear a special Hillcrest Bank t-shirt.
- The Hillcrest Give Me Five are the universal rules for our school which encourage and support students to be responsible for their own behavior and actions. The rules are used consistently in all areas of the building including the lunchroom and playground.
- Our “No Bullies” curriculum, from NJ State Bar Association, provides a systematic approach to teaching our students about teasing & bullying behaviors and appropriate responses. Through lessons and on-going activities, we teach about the roles and responsibilities of students and adults at our school related to teasing & bullying.
- Hillcrest School is very proud of the Special/Enrichment Programs that are offered to our students.
- The Wee Deliver Post Office offers our students an opportunity to learn the art of letter-writing as they create letters for their friends throughout the school. The letters are then put into our Hillcrest Mailbox and delivered by our second grade letter-carriers.
- The Art and Science Fair provides the opportunity for students to display the projects they’ve created for these two specific subject areas. Parents and families come to see the projects and celebrate the successes of the students.
- The Emergent Readers Program is a collective effort between the Hillcrest faculty and parent volunteers designed to give kindergarten students who are learning to read the opportunity to practice and have fun with the reading process.
- Our Second Grade Enrichment Program is a wonderful opportunity for students in grade two to explore the arts and creative expression. Several different enrichment classes are designed and run by our second grade teaching staff and special area teachers.
Woodland School (K-2) – Woodland School is located at Johnston Drive in Morristown and has a population of approximately 325 students. The information contained herein is reported for the years 2007-2010 and compares Woodland with other elementary schools in New Jersey. In addition to the numerical data, included is important information about initiatives and exciting programs that make Woodland a school where students are both challenged and nurtured. It also describes an environment where staff members work and grow professionally, where opportunities are explored that forge meaningful partnerships between and among parents, the community and the school.
- Woodland has six class sections of Kindergarten and First Grades, five Second Grade classes, one self-contained Special Education class and a Bilingual First and Second grade class. One of the Kindergarten classes is bilingual.
- The Special Education section has an assigned teacher and two full-time assistants.
- Specially trained staff provides instruction in Science, Music, Art, Physical Education, Computers and Library skills to every student.
- Extra help is available in Language Arts, Mathematics, Intensive Literacy and English Limited Learners. Eligible students also receive services from a Speech and Language Therapist, an Occupational Therapist, a Psychologist, a Learning Disabilities Consultant, a Social Worker and Guidance Counselor.
- Thanks to an active and supportive Home and School Association (HSA), our students are presented with a “live” cultural arts program nearly every month. These programs enhance themes presented in the regular classrooms throughout the school year. In addition, the HSA helps students in many other ways making the school a true partnership between parents and teachers.
- Our school’s Challenge Objective helps guide school activities each year. In the 2010-11 school year the “Character Education” continues from a solid foundation begun in 2003. Field trips, dramatic performances, guest speakers, selected books, live closed-circuit television programs into classrooms, research on computers, and art work reflect thoughts and ideas about being constructive and contributing citizens at Woodland. An emphasis on anti-bullying and teasing programs ensure that the school culture reflects our attentive care for the individual student.
- Woodland’s Second grade “seniors” buddy up with Thomas Jefferson third graders and exchange pictures, letters and visits throughout the year. Third graders love showing off their wonderful new school and the experience helps our second graders make a smooth transition the following September.
- Each second grade student is taught how to swim by certified Morristown High School staff and students.
- Students write and deliver “Wee Deliver” mail to each other through this Home & School initiative.
- Our students present musical performances at a winter concert, as well as, at local nursing homes during the holidays. In a six day cycle students have opportunity on three of these six days to gather as student body to acknowledge birthdays and to honor America. On the other three mornings Second Graders rotate as anchors the “Good Morning Woodland” closed-circuit television program that highlights school events, birthdays, book reviews and weather report and important character education concepts.
Beyond these data, the Morris School District provides a rich and varied educational experience for all students (pre-school handicapped through adult). Our programs have received national recognition and are supported through federal and New Jersey state grants. Many initiatives in curriculum are data-driven solutions which provide outstanding support for the academic growth and developmental growth of all students. Above all, the Morris School District remains committed to utilizing the strengths of our staff and community to assist the youngsters we serve in becoming the backbone of our future.
Sussex Avenue School (3-5) – The Sussex Avenue School is located at 125 Sussex Avenue in Morristown and has a population of approximately 317 students. In addition to numerical facts, I would like to share with you information about other initiatives and programs that make Sussex a school where students are both challenged and nurtured, staff members work to grow professionally and opportunities are explored to create partnerships between parents, the community and the school.
- Sussex has 16 sections of third, fourth and fifth grades, including traditional and special education classes.
- Our Balanced Literacy framework focuses on the meaningful use of children’s literature and process writing designed to help all students learn to read, write, listen and speak effectively. It integrates all aspects of literacy including reading, vocabulary, writing, speaking, spelling and grammar.
- Our mathematics curriculum is based on the standards from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, as well as state core curriculum standards and requires students to reason as well as compute.
- Specially trained staff teaches Spanish, Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, computer skills and Library skills to every student.
- Extra help is available in Language Arts, Mathematics, and English as a Second Language. We also receive services from a Speech and Language Therapist, a Psychologist, a Learning Consultant, a Social Worker and a counselor.
- Our media center circulates thousands of books, using a computerized circulation system and it also contains our 24 iMac computer lab. In addition, two ibook carts with 15 ibooks each are available for use in every classroom. Each classroom contains two Dell computers, a complete technology cart containing an LCD projector and laptop with access to the Internet.
- Sussex has a Gifted and Talented Program for all grades that includes enrichment courses for every student and the Quest Program for students of superior academic ability and achievement.
- An Extended Day Academic Support program provides additional time after school for students to improve academic skills required to perform proficiently on the state assessments.Our Home and School Parent Association sponsors cultural arts and other programs that enrich our student’s lives and perspectives.
- Our third graders “buddy up” with second graders at our sister school, Alfred Vail, to exchange letters and share activities so that the September transition from Alfred Vail is a smooth one.
- We contribute to our community by singing at nursing homes and the Rockaway Mall by inviting over 80 seniors from local nursing homes to visit us for a Thanksgiving dinner, and by donating non perishable foods to the food pantry. We also enjoy mentoring visits by volunteers from the Morris Township Police and Fire Departments.

Alexander Hamilton School (3-5) – The Alexander Hamilton School is located at 24 Mills Street in Morristown and has a population of approximately 276 students. Important initiatives and programs at Alexander Hamilton which improve instruction, empower our professionals, and foster a partnership between our parents and teachers include the following:
- As part of our district-wide Assessment for Learning initiative, teachers attend professional development workshops and meet regularly to share effective instructional and assessment strategies. Teachers use formative assessment to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners in our classrooms. We use developmental continuums to assess progress in reading and writing along with district-wide benchmark and portfolio assessments. This year, all teachers will receive three days of professional development using the ETS program entitled Keeping Learning on Track.
- Alexander Hamilton School was a fortunate recipient of a Dodge Foundation grant that has allowed our staff to become trained in the Schools Attuned program based on the research and thinking of Dr. Mel Levine from the All Kinds of Minds Institute.
- We have benefited from the support of the Morris Educational Foundation to develop the concept of the “Learning Organization” in partnership with a professional facilitator. As a professional learning community, we continue to build leadership capacity, foster communication, and collaborate to successfully implement school and district initiatives.
- Our students benefit from a balanced literacy program which focuses on the meaningful use of children’s literature and process writing to teach reading and writing skills as well as social studies and science.
- For the past five years, as part of a district wide initiative, we have focused on students’ writing using “The Writer’s Workshop.” This approach to writing instruction centers on the key traits of writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Teachers model what good writing looks like, students write regularly on a variety of topics, and teachers confer individually with students to encourage the development of writing fluency.
- Our math curriculum and program, which has as a framework the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards and the new Common Core Standards, addresses the importance of teaching estimation, problem solving, numeration, patterning, reasoning, math as communication, whole number operations, computations, geometry, and measurement.
- This year we are utilizing Rosetta Stone for Spanish Language instruction. Students have online access to the program in school and at home. The program includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking components, and is completely individualized so that students progress at their own pace.
- Our media center circulates thousands of books containing current and award winning children’s literature, and has a computerized circulation system and reference materials on CD ROM. It is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and four PC’s to facilitate the integration of technology into student learning.
- Our multimedia computer lab is equipped with a multimedia projection system, twenty Power MACS and five PC’s to enhance student learning. Each computer station has access to the Internet. Every classroom has a minimum of two computers that are connected to the World Wide Web, and a laptop and projector to facilitate the integration of technology into daily instruction.
- Our Home and School Association plans and supports numerous programs as well as acting as a liaison between our parents and teachers. The Home and School Association researches, funds, and provides, amongst other activities, outstanding cultural arts assemblies for our students on a monthly basis. This year Third Grade students are participating in a residency program with the Morristown Community Theater entitled New Jersey Infomercials. Fourth Grade students benefited from a Storytelling and Writing Workshop residency with Paula Davidoff in October. Our Fifth Grade students will participate in a residency focused on the American Revolution: Leading Causes and the Role of Morristown in March and April.
- We offer an extensive After School Club Program, which is coordinated by our Home and School Association.
- The Gifted and Talented Program which began in 1998, includes a self-selected Enrichment Course for all, and the QUEST Program for students of superior ability and achievement.
- The Alexander Hamilton School cooperates with Columbia University Teachers College to provide three CABAS® AIL classrooms (one at each grade level 3-5). CABAS® AIL stands for Comprehensive Application of Behavior Analysis in Schools (CABAS) and Accelerated Independent Learner (AIL). The classroom teachers are Columbia University PhD graduate students who are working on, or have obtained, CABAS® Board Certification as Master Teachers. In addition to the classroom teacher, each CABAS® AIL classroom has one or two Masters level Columbia University student interns who assist in providing state of the art individualized instruction for all students. The classrooms are centers of excellence devoted to implementing the most current research based pedagogy and developmental interventions. Professor R. Douglas Greer, the senior consultant to the Morris School District, is a member of the Columbia University Teachers College Faculty and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
- Our Character Education program promotes positive messages and revolves around our student Character Code. All of our students practice TRRFCC (terrific) character traits that enhance our school community: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
- We utilize the New Jersey State Bar Foundation Bully-Busting Curriculum: Six Essential Lessons and promote peaceful conflict resolution.
- We are continuing the innovative global warming program, Cool the Earth, during the 2010-2011 school year. With its collective-action approach, Cool the Earth educates students and their families about global warming and inspires them to take simple, energy-saving actions at home to reduce their carbon emissions. Our Ecology Center provides students with a place to explore nature, and plant seeds and plants and watch them grow.
Our School Guiding Principles were created through the cooperation of students, parents, teachers, the administration, and community members. The Alexander Hamilton Community promises to provide all members the opportunity to become caring, dedicated, lifelong learners who strive for individual success and who grow to be responsible, free thinking citizens. Thomas Jefferson School (3-5) The Thomas Jefferson School is located at 101 James Street in Morristown and has a population of approximately 299 students. As you think about the success and needs of our school, I would request that you also keep in mind other important initiatives and programs we have at Thomas Jefferson which address the improvement of instruction, empowerment of our professionals, and the opportunities to develop a partnership between our parents and teachers:
- Balanced literacy framework which focuses on the meaningful use of children’s literature and process writing designed to help all students learn to read, write listen and speak effectively. It integrates all aspects of literacy including reading, vocabulary, writing, speaking, spelling and grammar.
- The implementation of effective reading and writing instruction incorporating national Best Practices in Literacy Education.
- The implementation of the DRA2 assessment tool at the K-5 grade levels. This tool enables the teachers to record and diagnose the student’s strengths and weaknesses in the areas of comprehension, fluency, and phonics.
- Everyday Math is the math program used throughout our school that mixes traditional mathematical skills with exciting “everyday” application. This program is highly acclaimed and aligns with NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. The activities are hands-on and challenge students to use higher-level thinking skills. - A Science lab. Where hands on experiments that foster inquiry based learning enriches the minds of our students. Science modules addressing life sciences, physical sciences and earth science are taught at each grade level.

- Two mobile lap-top computer labs with wireless access to the internet. These labs are utilized in our classrooms. Additionally, each classroom is equipped with two PC’s and a lap top cart and projector.
- An active and supportive Parent and Teacher Organization which plans and supports numerous cultural arts programs as well as acting as a liaison between our parents and teachers.
- A residency program for third, fourth, and fifth graders. We have established a strong partnership with the Morristown Community Theater. Residents work with our third graders and teach them cultural dances from around the world. Our fourth graders produce a play working with members of the Morristown Community Theater, and our fifth graders are instructed in poetry writing by a dynamic local poet.
- A Gifted and Talented Program, which began in 1998 includes a self-selected Enrichment Course for all, and the QUEST Program for students of superior ability and achievement.
- A comprehensive Character Education Program which includes opportunities for service learning. Normandy Park Multiage Magnet School (K-5) – The Normandy Park School is located at 19-A Normandy Parkway in Morristown and has a population of approximately 378 students. The success of our school comes about from the initiatives and programs we currently have in place. These programs, which are listed below, address the improvement of instruction, empowerment of our professionals, and the opportunities to develop a partnership between our parents and teachers:
- An integrated balanced literacy program which focuses on the meaningful use of children’s literature and process writing to teach reading and writing skills as well as social studies and science. Program components include Reading and Writing Workshop, Guided Reading, Independent Reading, Interactive Writing, Independent Writing, Word Study, etc.
- A “hands on” math curriculum, which targets the New Jersey Core Content Standards in Mathematics.
- A school-wide science and technology program that extends and enriches the science curriculum.
- A commitment to the “Character Counts” and “No More Bullies” character education programs, which provide pro-active strategies to teach our students how to be caring members of our school community.
- A media center, which circulates thousands of books containing current and award winning children’s literature, and has a computerized circulation system and reference material on CD ROM.
- A multimedia computer lab containing dozens of e-MACS, and laptops to enhance student learning, as well as a Smart board and document reader.

While we have much to be proud of at Normandy Park School, we must always look to improve, learn new and proven teaching methods, and constantly assess our mission in order to keep pace with the world in which we live.
Frelinghuysen Middle School (6-8) – The Frelinghuysen Middle School is located at Jane Way in Morristown and has a population of approximately 1040 students. Frelinghuysen is an exemplary middle school that uses a team structure approach. The heart of Frelinghuysen Middle School is the belief that we are responsive to the diverse characteristics and needs of our young people. Teams of teachers during common planning time, led by a team leader, meet to plan and discuss issues related to students, curriculum, instruction and team responsibilities. Teachers have the opportunity to meet with parents, design individual student interventions, plan interdisciplinary lessons, share instructional strategies, schedule assessments, work on team goals and meet with support staff.
All students receive instruction in the core subjects of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and world languages by a grade level interdisciplinary team of teachers. Frelinghuysen’s eighty minute block schedule provides an optimal amount of uninterrupted instructional time. All mathematics courses are based on the Standards promoted by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The science curriculum uses scientific inquiry to develop a working knowledge of the scientific method through a heavy reliance on lab-based experiences. The social studies curriculum emphasizes the study of geography, history and contemporary social/political issues. The language arts program employs the reading writing workshop model and a balanced literacy approach. Reading is taught across the curriculum in all subjects. Students’ cycle classes include a wide selection of courses such as General Art, Visual Art, Connected Art, Industrial Arts, Media Applications and Computers. Enrichment courses include Quest, Basic Skills, Study Skills, Math Enrichment, Language Arts Enrichment, World Language Enrichment, Information Literacy, Resolving Conflict Creatively Program, Band, Orchestra, and Chorus, Mythology and Historical Literature.
Morris School District values the pursuit of excellence. Approximately ten percent of the student population qualified for Quest, the middle school’s gifted and talented program, by meeting or exceeding the rigorous district standards. In addition, accelerated courses offerings include Algebra I in grade 7 and Geometry in grade 8.
The experiences students undergo during these formative years have a lifelong influence; therefore Frelinghuysen Middle School provides numerous extracurricular activities that enhance their special abilities and interests. Performing arts offerings include jazz band, select chorus and a major theatrical production. Interscholastic sports program include boys and girls soccer, cross-country, field hockey, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, girl’s lacrosse, cheerleading, baseball, softball, and track and field. Intramural sports include touch football, and volleyball. Extracurricular clubs include yearbook, school newspaper, Builders Club, Student Council, Drill Team, Art Club, Math Counts, Lego League, Hands on Math, Chess Club, Lantern (peer leadership program) and the Morris County Consortium. Also, an after school homework tutorial program provides assistance for students who are struggling to meet the academic standards maintained in each curricular area. In addition, NJAfter3, a community partnership with the Neighborhood House, provides an extensive after school academic and recreational program for over 200 students.
Frelinghuysen Middle School has developed a House model and a tiered democratic governance system. The House of the Phoenix, House of the Tiger and the House of the Dragon are each governed by a House Council. The House Council includes an administrator, three team leaders, a cycle and special education teacher, one parent and two students. The House Council purpose is to assure that there is a seamless integration of instruction within and across all grade levels and community membership within their House.
Overseeing the three Houses is the Visionary Planning Board which consists of administrators, two teacher representatives from each House, parents, a central office administrator, and a member of the Board of Education. The Visionary Planning Board’s is charged with the overall stewardship of Frelinghuysen Middle School. It is a reflective and decision making body that fosters a rich academic culture and supports teacher development.
Student achievement is our primary goal at Frelinghuysen and, to that end, our middle school works collaboratively with all the stakeholders – students, teachers, administrators, board of education members, central office personnel and community members – in a common vision that guides the ongoing development of our middle school. This shared vision is the foundation of our success.
Morristown High School (9-12) – The Morristown High School is located at 50 Early Street in Morristown and has a population of approximately 1458 students. Since 1869, Morristown High School maintains a proud history as a comprehensive secondary school serving the intellectual, social, athletic and career needs of its students. A microcosm of the new millennium, Morristown High School is rich in economic, racial and cultural diversity. Some families have been in the district for generations, while others have only recently immigrated to the United States. Comprised of ethnically diverse students speaking more than 19 different languages, the educational program serves the students entrusted to the school by its communities: Morristown, Morris Township and Morris Plains.
Morristown High School offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, including 20 Advanced Placement Courses and 21 Honors level courses. Our students maximize opportunities to sample and explore emerging career fields in areas such as technology, music, visual and performing arts, and the medical and science fields. Morristown High School provides an extensive program of interscholastic sports, co-curricular activities and performing arts.
One of our unique and innovative programs is the Science Academy – funded by Pfizer, Inc. as an initiative to link education and industry. The Science Academy is a school within a school that enables students to experience an in-depth study of continuous programming in math and science. Academy students are introduced to the wide variety of careers in the health, medical, science and pharmaceutical fields through mentoring opportunities, job shadowing, field trips and speaker presentations.
Many campus chapters of national organizations complement, enhance and enrich our students’ educational experience. Recognizing leadership, academic achievement, service and integrity Morristown High School offers Honor Societies in four world languages, the Art Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the Saul Swanger chapter of the National Honor Society. Service programs include chapters of Habitat for Humanity, Key Club (Kiwanis Club), and Interact (Rotary Club). Leadership development is fostered through the Peer Group Connection program in which 48 seniors participate in team building and acclimation activities with our freshmen. Competitive academic teams include Academic Decathlon, Forensics and the Math team.
Morristown High School fosters student involvement in co-curricular clubs and interest groups; offering 32 academic/cultural activities that enhance our students’ educational experience. Eighty percent of the student body participates in one or more of our 27 varsity and 57 interscholastic athletic teams. Out of the total study body, 948 students report participation in one or more of our co-curricular offerings.
Scholastically, the classes of 2010 and 2011 boast 22 Commended Students, two National Hispanic Scholars, one National Achievement Scholars and four National Merit Semi-Finalists. Twenty-seven Morristown High School students achieved recognition as AP Scholars, 11 were recognized as AP Scholars with Honor, and 20 as AP Scholars with Distinction. Eleven students scored 800 in either the verbal, mathematics or writing sections of the SAT. Many members of these classes attend colleges rated “most” and “highly” competitive.
Morristown High School is actively involved in a collaborative systemic school reform process. This process uses strategic planning to establish a shared vision of the future in the areas of teaching and learning, to determine specific objectives for reaching the vision and to manage the change through regular assessment, planning, implementation and reassessment.
